Quit Tobacco Movement


on World No Tobacco Day, 31st May 2013

“Quit Tobacco Movement: A Campaign Involving health Professionals” at Gandhi Ashram, Ahmedabad, Gujarat was celebrated on 31st May on the WHO theme “Ban tobacco advertising, promotion and sponsorship” by Ahmedabad Dental College & Hospital in association with Indian Society of Periodontology, HCG Cancer Center, MPower Cricket Academy and Ahmedabad City Police was held as a part of Public Health Initiative for tobacco-use cessation awareness among dental health professionals and city people.

The event got a kick start by press meet with dignitaries

  • Dr. Mihir Shah (Dean, Ahmedabad Dental College & Hospital),
  • Dr. Bharat Gadhvi (CEO, HCG Cancer Center) and
  • Dr. Rajendra Toprani (Director, HCG Cancer Center)

on the dais and around 18 press from print and electronic media with full program telecast by DD Girnar channel on YUVA TARVARAT show.

The informative lectures by

  • Dr. Sandip Ladani (Periodontist) – Tobacco-use Cessation: An overview of advances in pharmacotherapy
  • Dr. Mrugesh Vaishnav (Psychiatrist) – Nicotine dependence and behavioral counseling for tobacco-use cessation: Changing paradigm in Indian context
  • Dr. Rajendra Toprani (Oncosurgeon) – Pre-cancer & Cancer burden of tobacco-use in India: Public health perspective
  • Dr. Shyam Killol Shelat (Intellectual Property Attorney, London) – India Tobacco Control Act COTPA: “Ban Tobacco Advertising, Promotion & Sponsorship (TAPS)”

were mind bogglers for 120 registrants.

The highlight of the “Quit Tobacco Movement” was the road show which was graced by Celebrity Youth Icon Radio Mirchi RJ Dhvanit. This anti-tobacco road show included a mob of around 400-500 dental interns, PG students and dental fraternity from different dental colleges in and around Ahmedabad city, 40 children of 10-14 years of MPower Cricket Academy and around 100 Ahmedabad City Policemen outside Gandhi Ashram with placard and banners followed by 1000 balloons release printed with anti-tobacco sign and later on gathering around a huge cigarette model and writing quit tobacco messages by all (especially created for the anti-tobacco day) and taking a pledge to quit tobacco and smoking. The enthusiastic crowd of dental health professionals having 25 ISP life members and 45 student members of ISP moved for the felicitation ceremony where Dr. Santhosh Sreedhar, Dr. Balaji Manohar thanked and felicitated Dr. Mihir Shah and his team for organizing such a great event for noble cause. The Program got great media coverage and was meant for public awareness in Ahmedabad City and will be a stepping stone in making Ahmedabad the “2nd Smoke free city “in India.
